Child Support: A Straightforward Process
Compared to other divorce issues, determining child support is a relatively easy and straightforward process. In a majority of divorces and separations, factors such as parental income, number of children and the cost of health insurance are entered into a formula, which calculates the amount of child support one needs to pay. The formula helps ensure the person who pays support is not paying more than what is needed to adequately and fairly supplement the cost of raising the child.
While the child support guidelines are mandatory, the court may deviate from them under special circumstances. Our Alabama child support attorneys are well versed in the specifics of child support law. We will direct your case in a manner appropriate to your situation.
Child Support Modifications
Have you undergone a significant change in financial circumstances? You may be able to modify your child support agreement. Tell us about your situation. We can help determine if your child support agreement should be modified up or down accordingly.
Child support modification requires a change in circumstances, including:
- Payor lost his or her job
- Payor got a promotion or a new job with a substantial pay increase
- Child turned 19
- Custodial parent moved away, increasing the travel costs of the non-custodial parent
- Loss or adjustment of health insurance
